Go with a new starter that has the new solenoid on it at AutoZone! Can't go wrong. ( Not a rebuilt ) When you take the old starter off again ( BUMMER )!! Look at the ring gear on the flywheel to see if any teeth are missing or damaged! New starter will have a new Bendix in it also! IF RING GEAR HAS TEETH MISSING! IF YES!! TRANSMISSION HAS GOTTA COME OUT. ( automatic trans, replace flywheel. Standard shift trans. Pull the trans, and remove the flywheel, then install new ring gear on original flywheel! Best bet is take it to a auto shop you TRUST. Removing a transmission ( sucks big time )!!

Hey Mike this is Don getting back to you about your uncle's your grandfather's truck no problem to the truck is your flywheel the starter is on the flywheel teeth so there's missing teeth so you have to get a screwdriver or something to move the starter will for a little bit just kind of move it and then go back and try to start it again so the starter we'll catch on to the flywheel cuz it looks like it's missing some teeth on drywall also before you do that try to check the starter before you mounted in see if it's going in and out so you know the teeth are grabbing onto the other teeth anyway I hope it works good luck take care

It does sound like the bendix isn’t engaging maybe misaligned loosen and try to align you may need shims or need a new starter you may have a bad bendix

Teeth may be missing on the fly wheel, or the sprocket on the end of the starter shaft may be damaged. It could even just be the starter solenoid.
